Studying in the Netherlands: everything you need to know
The Netherlands offers university education (WO) and universities of applied sciences (HBO) with clear procedures for admission and residence. On this page you will find what you need, how the IND process works, what work options you have and your choices after graduation, including the Orientation Year.
Important: for a student residence permit, your educational institution submits the application to the IND. You cannot apply yourself. You arrange your financial means and your insurance. Europe Work Pass does not submit official applications; we support you with checklists, guidance, pre-checks and reminders.
What you need: basic requirements
Admission to a recognised educational institution in the Netherlands
A student residence permit for which the institution submits the application to the IND. You provide sufficient financial means and valid insurance.
Working during your studies
For students from outside the EU or EEA, work is permitted up to sixteen hours per week during the academic year, or full-time in June, July and August. Your employer must obtain a work permit (TWV) for this.
After graduation
Orientation Year: a one-year residence permit to look for work or start a business, with free access to the labour market during that year.
The step-by-step plan
Choose a programme and complete your admission
The institution submits your student residence permit application to the IND; you arrange your financial means and insurance
Travel to the Netherlands and collect your residence card
After graduation, apply for the one-year Orientation Year
