Studying in Belgium. Everything you need to know
Belgium offers international higher education in Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels. On this page you will find what you need, how to apply, what work opportunities exist and what your options are after graduation.
Important. Europe Work Pass does not submit official applications on your behalf. You must apply for your visa, residence permit and university enrollment yourself. We provide checklists, guidance, pre-checks and reminders.
What do you need. Basic requirements
Full-time enrollment at a recognized higher education institution in Belgium in Flanders, Wallonia or Brussels
A long-stay type D visa for study with proof of sufficient funds and valid insurance. The application is submitted through the Belgian embassy or consulate
Working during your studies
You may work up to twenty hours per week during the academic year, as long as it does not interfere with your studies. During school holidays there is no restriction on working hours
After graduation
You can apply for the twelve-month orientation year to look for a job or start a business. This is a dedicated residence status for graduates from outside the European Economic Area
The step-by-step plan
Choose a study program and complete your admission
Submit your application for a type D student visa at the embassy or consulate
Travel to Belgium, register locally and collect your residence card
After graduation, apply for the optional twelve-month orientation year if desired
